Mecca Bah

where: Brisbane, Emporium, 1000 Ann St

website: meccabah.net

One night we were looking for a nice, quiet place, where we could go with our friend and not only have a tasty dinner. We were also hoping for a good atmosphere.

I had a look at Mecca Bah website. “Infusion cuisine influenced by the flavours and dishes that come from Morocco, the Middle East and North Africa” and didn’t need more, my taste buds went crazy and decision has been made: we’re going to Mecca Bah!

The place looked really nice, so my expectations were even higher. Waitress gave us a menu, we ordered some drinks and were trying to decide what do we want to eat. Almost everything sounded appetising, so the choice wasn’t easy. And again – our expectations were rising really fast. But wait.. Where is our beer? It’s been at least 20 minutes since we ordered them. If we’re waiting 20 minutes for a beer, how long we’re going to wait for our dinner?

That was the wrong question. I didn’t check their timing exactly, but it felt like at least an hour (at first it was funny, we had our beers and many topics to talk about, then we started to worry, if they maybe forget about us? and then we were all just becoming more and more angry and hungry).

And at last! Food arrived. But we run out of beer. So again, we ordered some more, and waited for it another 20 minutes…

None of the dishes was worth the wait. We had: Moroccan spiced calamari with Turkish bean salad, Middle Eastern spiced swordfish, spicy couscous and Garlic chicken kebab, mjaddarah & tabbouleh ($24 each). Calamari were pretty good, except the portion was way too small for a hungry man. Swordfish – overcooked and really bland, even couscous tasted better than the “main star” of the dish. And chicken kebab wasn’t even close to restaurant quality dish. Disappointement all the way through.

When our second round of beers finally arrived, we asked immediately for a bill, to avoid another 30 (or so) minutes waiting. Didn’t work. After 40 minutes we went to the counter. Our waitress said “oooooh, I forgoooooot about your bill” and smiled.

Our friend was really hungry after diner, we were glad there is Guzman Y Gomez next door.

So again: one night we were looking for a nice, quiet place, where we could go with our friend and not only have a tasty dinner. We were also hoping for a good atmosphere. If you have similar expectations keep looking! Don’t make my mistake: don’t go to Mecca Bah.
